Mack

Sculptures 2003–2020

Over the past twenty years, Heinz Mack has become well known for his startlingly original sculptural pieces. He has created such works as The Sky over Nine Columns, which was first presented in Venice in 2014. The installation consists of nine columns, or steles, each over seven meters high and lined with over 800,000 gold mosaic tiles.  To the artist, the site of the installation is just as essential as the work itself. “For me, space is as important as sculpture,” Mack has said. “I cannot imagine one without the other.” Accordingly, his works often employ light and movement, the pieces in dialogue with their surroundings.

This catalogue raisonné documents Mack’s sculptures created between 2003 and 2020. These works were completed with a diverse range of materials such as natural stone, metal, wood, plaster, sand, glass, granite, and marble. In his latest works, the artist continues to develop themes from earlier phases in his career, such as the stele, with its ability to transform light and determine space. This volume, lavishly illustrated with six hundred images, provides a detailed look at the latest phase of this prolific artist’s career.
